Comprehensive Eye Exams

Comprehensive Eye Exams

Your vision is important to us, and good eyesight starts with a complete eye exam. A thorough eye examination plays a significant role in preventive health care. As many eye problems show no visible signs or symptoms, you may be unaware of an existing condition. Early diagnosis and treatment can, therefore, make it possible to manage any problems and help prevent vision loss.

How long does a comprehensive eye exam take?
A comprehensive eye test can take from 45-60 minutes. It depends on the patients’ needs and how many tests are performed.

What is a comprehensive eye exam?

In a complete eye exam, the optometrist examines the entire eye and visual system. The eye examination can detect eye diseases, disorders, and health problems such as glaucoma, cataracts, retinal detachments and macular degeneration, diabetes and high blood pressure.

A comprehensive eye examination depends on each patient’s symptoms, and our optometrists use their experience to determine which tests to perform. The eye examination can include most or all of the following tests:

Patient History
Your optometrist will ask about your overall eye health. This might include enquiring when any vision problems began, a work-related environment that might affect your vision, or eye conditions existing in your family. Together with your optometrist, you will discuss your visual needs at home, work, or free time including vision-related hobbies.

Visual Acuity
Among the first tests performed in a comprehensive vision test, are the visual acuity tests that evaluate how clearly each eye can see. You may be familiar with this test already; it’s where you read letters of different sizes from an eye chart.

Preliminary Tests
Preliminary tests assess depth perception, colour vision, eye muscle movements, peripheral or side vision, and how your pupils respond to light.

Refraction
This refraction exam defines the lens prescription for your eyeglass or contact lens with precise measures. Our eye doctors use advanced digital autorefractors alongside an in-depth fine-tuning with subjective refraction. By combining both techniques you will be assured the best possible visual acuity.

Keratometry/Topography
For this part of the eye test, your eye doctor looks at the curvature of the cornea, which can be critical when finding the right contact lenses. It includes focusing a circle of light on the cornea and measuring the reflection.

Eye movement
Your optometrists will use several tests to evaluate how well your eyes align and coordinate when working together and individually.

Eye pressure test
Screening for glaucoma includes testing pressure inside the eye which is known as your Intraocular pressure (IOP). IOP testing is vital to attain baseline pressure readings in order for us to detect glaucoma earlier. IOP testing on its own does not give your optometrist the complete picture so usually further testing will be required if there are any concerns.

Retinal imaging
With retinal imaging, a high-resolution digital colour picture is taken of the back of your eye. With regular checkups, it establishes a baseline record of your retina, internal blood vessels and optic nerve. This makes it possible to spot subtle changes over time. This helps to detect and manage eye conditions such as glaucoma, diabetes, and macular degeneration early. Finding retinal disorders early on is critical to preventing serious disease progression.

OCT- Optical Coherence Tomography testing
OCT- technology is a non-invasive imaging test. OCT uses light waves to take cross-section pictures of your retina. This highly sophisticated test allows your eye doctor to see each of the retina’s distinctive layers. This allows your optometrist to map and measure its thickness. These measurements help with diagnosis. They also provide treatment guidance forglaucoma and retina diseases. These retinal diseases includeage-related macular degeneration (AMD) anddiabetic eye disease.

Macular pigment optical density (MPOD) testing
MPOD measures the risk of developing age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which is a common cause of blindness in people. The MPOD test measures the density of pigment cells in the macula.Decreasing macular pigment optical density can lead to the development of macular degeneration. With no known cure, early diagnoses, proactive treatment, and diet are crucial to preserving eyesight.

Visual Field testing
Visual field testing is a critical test that aids in both diagnosing and treating Glaucoma. We have invested in the Humpriss VFA technology which is the “Gold Standard” when it comes to visual field equipment. The Humpriss Visual Field Analyzer is also crucial in testing for CVAs (stokes) and brain tumours. We also use this equipment for Police, RCMP and other Ministry of Transportation (MTO) visual exams.

What to expect after your comprehensive eye exam?
Additional testing is sometimes needed to confirm or rule out potential issues. Our optometrists will apply their professional knowledge, experience, and judgment to create appropriate prescription lenses, develop eye training, or recommend a medical-surgical treatment based on the results.

Our eye doctors have over 20-years of experience in comprehensive eye exams and are dedicated to giving our patients honest and knowledgeable advice and the personal attention they deserve.
